2 out of 5 stars Typical 21st century teenage supernatural fair   August 30, 2008
E. Barrios (N.Y.C.)
Since I'm a fan of horror and the occult arts, I thought it was about time I checked out The Covenant. Luckily for me, I rented it.

Within the first ten minutes of the movie, it was clear to me that Hollywood made this for a certain demographic: teenagers who have short attention spans. This movie did not deliver but isn't that the norm nowadays when it comes to directing a film.

The acting was subpar, making me believe that casting for this flick consisted of going to the local burger joint at an upper middle class town and pointing a finger at those people needed for an upcoming witch movie. Truly a sad thing.

The plot wasn't all that bad but it needed professionals to develop it and not the crew that worked on The Covenant. I hate having to keep using this line but "it had so much potential" and that's the truth.

Bottom line, if you have teenagers who like the supernatural like watching the television show supernatural, then by all means buy them this DVD. However, if you want you and your kids to watch something more thought provoking but centers around the supernatural or the occult, then buy them the MGM double feature DVD of Kolchak: The Night Stalker/The Night Strangler. Even though it's dated, you simply cannot go wrong here.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining   August 8, 2008
MoMoney (Boston, MA)
Though this movie isn't exactly an award-wining epic or a piece of cinematic excellence, it is extremely entertaining and a perfect piece of escapist fantasy. The story line is very good as well as the special effects and the cinematography. The main actors are delightful to look at as long as you don't judge them on their acting ability. This movie won't make you question the meaning of life, but it will provide you with a few hours of entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars RENNY HARLIN, OPUS 13   July 12, 2008
wdanthemanw (Geneva, Switzerland)
**1/2 2006. Directed by Renny Harlin. Four friends are the heirs of four families of XVIIth century sorcerers. Keeping their powers secret to their comrades, they are soon challenged by a fifth young sorcerer who's got even more power than them. Renny Harlin's filmography contains excellent thrillers like Deep Blue Sea, Cliffhanger (Collector's Edition) or The Long Kiss Goodnight as well as regrettable works like Exorcist - The Beginning (Widescreen Edition) or this COVENANT. But I'm ready to be very lenient with the Finnish born director who has to pay his taxes, like you and me, and who'll undoubtedly give us another top notch film one of these days. This one is unfortunately already forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars A Supernatural Legacy   July 9, 2008
JT Bouwer (South Africa)
It was an absolute pleasure watching something descent for a change I've seen this several times already and just can get enough. If you don't have this as yet you are loosing out. Buy it you will not regret it.

I just feel they could have made it a little bit longer and more fighting at the end.

The Car and Truck accident in the movie is absolutely out of this world, I love watching that part about 3 times before continuing with the movie.

Just buy it!!!!!!!!!!
