Description
It's top of the class for slasher flick terror! Students at an Ivy League university campus are thrown into total panic by a gruesome series of murders as young men and women are hideously picked off one by one. The killer, a horribly twisted psychopath escaped from an asylum, lurks in the darkest corners and strikes where least expected, including a drive-in and a classroom. Pretty young Julie senses the terrible evil is coming for her next, and she pieces together the clues that lead to the ultimate showdown and a final exam in sheer, blood-curdling terror!

3 out of 5 stars If I ever escape from an asylum, I'D go there!   July 29, 2008

You know, I was going to be generous and give this a 3 star rating even before I saw any other reviews because after all this is SUPPOSED TO be a low-budget, cheap, cheesy '80s slasher flick and I only paid 8 bucks for it, so why not? Sure, the script, acting, special effects, sound and picture quality are all absolutely wretched, and I would never put MY name on anything that was so poorly made. But like I said, it's only a cheap, cheesy slasher flick, and they needed to save all the money they could so they could buy as much red fingernail polish (that they used to simulate blood) for all the bloody corpse scenes. okay, so a psycho killer maniac escapes from a mental institution, goes to the nearest college and starts killing people at random. Sure, it's not an original premise, but what do you expect from a movie called "Splatter U."? And if I ever escaped from a mental institution, that's exactly what I'd do! As I said, the script, plot, acting, special effects and production values are all horrible, and if I was to rate this movie solely on those qualities, this film would rate "A BIG FAT ZERO!" But since I happen to like low-budget, cheap, cheesy, worthless '80s slasher flicks (simply for the excessive gratuitous violence, if nothing else), allow me to break down my rating system for you:
1 Star: Because one of the actresses looks a lot like a girl I know and have a crush on in real life. I'm still trying to get her to go out with me, but that still has to be worth a star.
1 Star: For all the gruesome deaths and gratuitous violence. After all, that's why you watch movies like this. Right? And they had to have gone through a fortune in red fingernail polish to make all that fake blood. That HAS to be worth a star!
1 Star: Was going to be awarded for the obligatory topless and/or shower scene, but they didn't have one! Imagine making a movie like Splatter U. without even one obligatory nude shower scene! But, I'm still feeling generous, so I'll give a star out because a few of the girls were cute and they all had those "real cool" '80s hairstyles. Girls with '80s hair has got to be worth a star!
So there you have it! Three stars for this distinctive slasher flick! If you like this kind of thing, you'll have a blast.
If not.......well, just look out behind you!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad--a campy drive - in type horror flick   June 15, 2008
BUFFY/CHARMED/Star Wars Finatic! (RHODE ISLAND)
This movie wasn't bad. It's just about a psycho who escapes a mental institution and kills primarily women at a catholic univeristy.

The movie moves along quite nice, but doesn't really get into the reason behind the why this psycho kills poeple--guess cuase he's just plan nuts!!

I like the grainy ealy 80's look of the film and the clothes and hair are laughable--what's more laughable is that this flick must have been on a real tight budget--for days and nights go by and many of the characters wear the same clothes everyday!!! The gore is typical for the time it was filmed, stabbings, throats slashed and lots of fake blood everywhere....

If you like old type B / Drive In Flicks and can get it cheap, it's worth picking up to watch occasionally with some popcorn.

3 out of 5 stars Bad, but sort of fun at the same time   October 3, 2007

Released in 1984 Splatter University came out when the slasher film was starting to die out after hitting a massive high in the early 80s. While there were some good slashers to be found most were simply knock offs of more popular films and by the time an original twist was hard to come by. Splatter University had all the makings of a cult classic and the title easily rates as one of the very best slasher tiles of the 80s. While in some ways I suppose this can be labeled a cult flick it mostly falls flat.

When it comes to slasher flicks the script is never really the most important thing. But you still wanna try and write a fairly decent script and maybe an interesting character or two. But the script by Michael Cunningham, Richard W. Haines and John Michaels is mostly laughable. But in fairness that also sort of makes it fun. Some of the things these people have to say are quite idiotic and it can help and add a certain level of fun in an otherwise dead movie. There are some maybe fairly decent moments in the screenplay, but for the most part it's a mess.

Besides being one of the writers, Richard W. Haines also directs and pretty much fails at creating very much suspense or tension. Though to his credit the final act does show a little bit of promise, but it's also sort of laughable. When the killer is chasing after the final girl the way it was shot was so silly. Anyone who has seen this should know what I'm talking about.

Just the way he was running and the way it was shot adds a more comedic tone rather than scary. If not for that the scene would have played out a little bit better, so Richard Haines does show very little life. Even if it wasn't his intentions Richard Haines does get the so bad its good vibe going.

The acting was quite bad, but that is to be expected in this type of movie. Though not all the performances were bad; Dick Biel is halfway decent, but a little too over the top at time and Ric Randing also delivers a fairly decent performance. At times their acting was kinda bad, but they didn't have the best material to work with either.

Though I have to say in my opinion Francine Forbes actually puts in a pretty good performance, despite having some quite idiotic things to say at times she does try and she gives it her all. Her performance mostly goes unnoticed due to how poor the movies was, but go back and watch Splatter University, while I don't see an Oscar winner she was good enough despite the really poor script and poor co-stars.

The characters are your standard slasher movie characters, but here they are more annoying than your average slasher movie characters. Most of them are all rather pointless and are there simply to be knocked off.
But the problem is there were just too many characters who simply don't add to the plot and they never die or even come face to face with the killer.

And while on the subject of the killer it's so fairly obvious who the killer is. Richard Haines does try and throw you off a few times, but anyone with half a brain should figure out who the killer is rather early into the movie.

For such a low budget movie the gore wasn't too bad. Some of the best gore movies to come out of the 70s and 80s were low budget, but those movies also had a little more talent. I have heard of an unrated version I have the R-rated version; I did hear that the R is actually unrated, which could be true. I have seen a few movies listed as R even though they actually weren't.

Despite the title of the movie it really isn't a bloodbath; how can you call your movie Splatter University and not deliver on gore galore? There are moments where there seems to be a cut before any real bloodshed, which leads me to believe it must be cut or simply could just be the filmmakers choice; overall some decent gore, but for this type of flick and considering what the title is there should have been a lot more.

There is this one song that pops up quite a few times in the movie by a band called The Pedestrians and wow that was an awesomely bad song!! It's little things like that, which elevate Splatter University from being just a flat out bad movie to a bad, but yet sort of fun movie.

My favorite thing about the movie is actually the back of the box, some critic named Rick Sullivan of the Gore Gazette hails this as the most terrifying movie of the year; unless his quote was taken out of context that is the scariest thing about the film. This was released the same year as A Nightmare on Elm Street, which movie do you think is scarier? The trailer is also great when it's compared to being as scary as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. Is it me or do the worst of horror movies always have a marketing ploy like that?

Bottom line is Splatter University came along at a time when the slasher movie was starting to die out and what we get here is a mixed bag. Splatter University ranges from being just downright horrible to be being so bad it's good. I would say it's simply more so bad it's bad, but again there are some fairly bad, but very fun moments.

Despite all of that I will admit I own the movie and proud to own the movie. Despite how bad it can be there are some fun moments to be found and it turns out to be a some what fun and at times boring movie. But fans of cult cinema should give it a try.

The DVD from Elite is quite bad; the picture and sound are rather lousy and the only extras to be found are trailers, but don't let that stop you from picking this movie up.

The one thing about Splatter University is the final act; there is actually a decent twist in the final minutes. It's something most horror movies normally don't do. So for that I have to give the makers some credit.

In closing, Splatter University is a some what fun slasher flick. As stated before there are moments that are just downright horrible with nothing good and there are moments where it's still terrible, but adds to the fun of the movie.

3 out of 5 stars nice and bloody   February 20, 2006

Splatter University is one of those so bad it's good school slasher movies. The movie really doesn't have much going for it with the acting and directing, but it has blood and lots of it. The movie is cheesy, and some of the acting was so friggen bad that it was hilarious. The cast was full of nice looking girls, but not much in the bar ass department. Aw, shucks. The movie also did a great job with introducing some great potential killers, but for some reason, for me, the real killer made himself obvious. With that being said, I still thought the ending of the movie was great, even though the heroine was killed.

When you think of school slasher movies, you usually think of a lot of bare t n' a, sadly this movie didn't have very much of that (but it did have a lot of teases). Some of the camera work was really shaky and overall bad, the directing and editing really lacked as well, but in a very weird way, it added a lot to the cheesiness of the movie. The killer, in my opinion, even though they tried to introduce other potential killers, was very obvious. But, perhaps that was intentional. I also really disliked that the would be heroine Julie (Francine Forbes), the leading lady of the film, get's killed in the climax of the movie. She was the cutest cast member, and the one I was rooting for!

I loved this movie. It wasn't as cheesy as the Slumber Party/Sorority House Massacre movies, as well done as Slaughter and Hell High, or as funny as Return To Horror High, but it was great. The movie had a lot of blood, (intentional and unintentional) humor, chicks, bad hair-do's, bad acting and everything else you would want in a cheesy drive-in-style movie. I would highly recommend this for fans of the above listed movies, and of course to gore hounds. The movie had a lot of that, and it was very well done (for the era), which can be a rarity. One other thing that confused me was that the DVD cover had photos of two deaths on the back, both of which are not in the movie. Weird
