A perfect marriage of novel but incisive writing, acting, and direction, Big is the story of a 12-year-old boy who wishes he were older, and wakes up one morning as a 30-year-old man (Tom Hanks). The script by Gary Ross (Dave) and Anne Spielberg finds some unexpected ways of attacking obvious issues of sex, work, and childhood friendships, and in all of these things the accent is on classy humor and great sensitivity. Hanks is remarkable in the lead, at times hilarious (reacting to caviar just as a 12-year-old would) and at others deeply tender. Penny Marshall became a first-rate filmmaker with this 1988 work. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars EXTRA SCENES ARE A TRIP   June 7, 2010

That stood out to me the most - having never seen all of these scenes that were edited from the theater and DVD editions. Some are good...some are very good and some were thankfully cut. I don't want to give away any. The blu-ray quality is terrific too.

3 out of 5 stars BIG Succeeds Rather Bigly   May 31, 2010

Big (1988) ***1/2 |C--110 min.| D: Penny Marshall. Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia, John Heard. PG

A young boy, who is tired of his life as a small boy in New York, makes a wish at a carnival to be "big." The next morning, to his horror, he finds that his wish has come true. He then goes to work for a major toy manufacturing company, and because of his childlike innocence, soon rises to the top of the company. It's a delightful fantasy that explores what most likely every child has wished at some point, and goes into what might happen if that came true. Every scene is delightful in every way, and the film is full of comedic and light-hearted moments that make us love childhood and everything about it (Chopsticks). There are plenty of scenes in this film that became instant classics, and it all culminates into a truly touching final scene. The screenplay is brief and charming and full of wit. There's plenty of lovely little bits of dialogue and a hilarious scene in the toy shop. It's a light-hearted, fantastical drama that will entertain kids, charm adults and keep its audience interested until the end. The characters are all appealing and likeable, and Tom Hanks is indispensible as the Big Kid of the title. It's a brilliant and original story concept that works brilliantly on the screen. Anyone would be a fool not to like it.

This movie is too funny, one of Hanks best right up there with The Burbs and The Money Pit. You will laugh and it will make you feel good. I loved this as a child and even now love it...and have seen over hundreds of times. Shows the true value of being true to your self...and living in the now. This movie is great and barrell of laughs!!

This is a great movie.. I have seen it many times before.. and I am glad now that I own it.. Watching an adult play a child with other adults.. is really cool.. check it out.. makes you really think of the "If I could do it again, What would I change" and this movie does just that if you could be a kid again..
