Love, Lies and Betrayal December 25, 2008 Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"The Books of John" Love, Lies and Betrayal Amos Lassen Coming soon from Ariztical is "The Books of John", a movie that follows the lives of three different people. Frank McClean (Jeff Batton), Will (Matthew Palmer) and Caryn (Kristen Justice) are our three main characters. Frank is alone after his longtime partner dies suddenly and without warning. Months after his death, Frank discovers that John (his deceased lover) had been keeping secret diaries and he uses them to get to know more about the man he was in a relationship with and who he never really knew. His friend, Will, is in an open relationship with Ben cannot understand why Frank is so upset by John's death. Caryn, Frank's best friend, has just broken up with her lover who she still loves and realizes she made a mistake by letting her get away. John's diaries lead Frank to Cullman, Alabama where he meets Trevor Thomas who had been having an affair with John and things get complicated. This movie has one of the silliest story lines I have ever seen and it seems to never end. The film begins terribly, the sound is almost impossible to hear, the cast is made up of amateurs and everything about it is unbelievable. Just the idea that Frank lived with John for twelve years and did not really know him is ridiculous. There are some redeeming factors however. The music when you can hear it is wonderful and the movie does have some realistic moments. The film does lead the viewer to question his own life and that in itself is something.
