good movie, good principles November 19, 2008

My fiance bought this movie for my mom: she likes "family time" with us, but she hates violent or shallow movies (unlike some of the rest of us in the family!) So this was a good option for everyone: "MOVIE NIGHT" for the movie lovers, yet BILLY GRAHAM for momma (who actually became a Christian through one of his TV shows some 30 years ago!)
Good movie, but not so cheesy as other Christian movies I've watched. I definitely recommend it! :-) It's a good principles movie that gets the point across without the cheesy music and bad filming---in fact, the VIDEO quality itself is as good as any other movie in my opinion.... :-) Hope you like it!
The Climb Delivers November 17, 2008

I was introduced to Christian films through a local radio station (Z88.3 FM) purely by accident. They were promoting the Christian film "Fireproof" with child star Kirk Cameron. I did go see the movie and I really thought it was wonderful. But I digress.
The Climb is a Billy Graham creation. I know many people out there have strong negative opinions about Billy Graham, but I truly think he was chosen for Christ's work.
It's about a strong, gifted, and VERY arrogant mountain climber with his eye on the most challenging mountain. (Sorry I can't remember the name but it's either in Peru or Chile). He is so narcissist that he thinks he can do this climb alone. He and another climber rescue the son of a business tycoon who decides to "reward" them by fronting the expense for the "ultimate climb".
I won't go further into this, but the battle of wills begins. These two are such opposites that it almost ruins both their dream.
This is a MUST SEE - although sometimes predictable it touches the heart. Anyone can relate to what each climber has gone through - grief, vanity, anger, etc...

2 solo climbers take part in a daring rescue which earns them a chance to achieve a dream - climbing Mount Chicanagua in the Chilean Andes.
2 very different characters now team up to reach their goal.
Derrick is a take-life-to-the-edge, I-love-me-who-do-do-you-love? person, while Michael takes life as it comes and has a strong relationship with God & his family.
Michael says in answer to Derrick's disgust at finding he is a Christian "I don't preach, but I do speak my mind!" The film is convincing, but not "preachy" with a strong message of sacrificial love & forgiveness.

What I liked about the movie was the believable non preachy story lines. Like with the one young couple where the woman Cheryl Martin is a Christian but isn't walking the talk, who then finds she has made a poor choice and faces some hard choices. Meanwhile the man Derrick Williams is struggling with his bitterness from not having a Dad growing up, and his goal of showing the Dad he never knew that he is better than him.
Meanwhile the other climber Michael Harris, is a widower, who is also a Christian, although not an in your face type which I found very refreshing. He seeks God first and listens and in doing so avoids mistakes the other climber is making. But he never gives up on his friend whom he sees as a hurting man. He simply loves him where he is at, which is what Christ does with each of us. In the end he brings the Biblical admonition of laying down our life for a friend to life.
Mack 'Mackie' Leonard is the owner of a sporting goods store whose son the climbers have saved so he promises to fund their big climb and has promised to build a new store in an area where businesses are needed. A man who works for him tries to go behind his back to change things, and gets fired for being corrupt. I like the whole story line.
I also loved the cinematography since we are a backpacking, skiing, climbing family and never get tired of great mountain scenes. Sure, some elements of the movie may seem sappy to hardened movie goers. But for me I simply liked the story line and how in an era when so many 'Christian' movies like the Left Behind Series are so sophomoric, that this movie is mature and well thought out.
On a side note, I so appreciated seeing a black man in a serious climbing movie, because climbing and most snow sports are often shown as being activities that only whites do. Hope the movie gets more minorities interested in climbing.

The production level is average but the message has some meat to it. If you're looking for a hollywood style movie, this isn't it but yet you have to look beyond that to how God loves us and sets our path!
