Description Under stormy skies, Edward and Alphonse Elric exploited the clandestine science of Alchemy in attempt of the forbidden - To resurrect their dearly departed mother. But every art form has its taboos and every science its laws not to be broken. The tragic failure of the young brothers unleashed an unholy reaction that ripped their bodies apart and their innocence asunder. Four years later, an evil lurks behind the false face of freedom, its growth unchecked. A lone State Alchemist combs the countryside in search of a mythological stone. If found, the stone could amplify natural talents and harness a power equal to the restoration of things once held precious, now lost. If found, the stone would also allow the State Military to senselessly obliterate countless more in the ongoing struggle. The youngest State Alchemist in history is soon faced with harsh truth: The power to create is but a breath away from the power to destroy

Amazing September 17, 2008 doodle Full Metal Alchemist is one of the best animes I have ever seen. Almost all of the episodes are fantastic, and even the filler is interesting. This anime had several scenes in it that are just heartbreaking, and it is definitely worth buying.
A Must Buy September 5, 2008 Marie Huddleston (USA) Full Metal Alchemist is a great series to add to any collection! I have never owned a box set of any anime series before this one. I am so glad to have finally bought the box set. I know this is a anime series that will never grow old and that I want to watch again and again. What better way than to own the set?
Truly Breathtaking August 15, 2008 Thomas Carden (Englewood, FL USA)
I have heard people call this the best anime of all time. And its hard to say that it isn't. I loaned this to a friend at work and she said that at one point she broke down and wept. This series is emotionally charged from start to finish. All 52 episodes rock, not one fails to move the story forward. I feel thank full for having been able to watch it. Do not miss this series.
Sometimes sacrifices have to be made to reach your goal July 12, 2008 THE MAIN MAN (Central Bookin', NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Edward and Alphonse Elric are two brothers who made a huge sacrifice. Too bad they came up very short and missed their goal by a light year. The Elric brothers learned a science driven practice based on equivalent exchange called alchemy. After their mother died, they attempted a forbidden science to bring her back. The spell back fired. Edward had to bond his brothers soul into steel armor, plus he lost an arm and leg in the process. Together they try to find an artifact called the Philosopher's Stone to repair the damage.
I'll try to keep this short because there's three more sets to cover. And the series continues to get better. This is a very strong and well crafted start. Full Metal Alchemist(FMA) accomplishes so many things in these first 16 episodes, other series can't pull off in 26. There is a nice blend of comedy, drama, and action. The characters are easy to identify with and the writing is superb so far. The stories are not repetitive rehash slop. Yes, some earlier situations are revisited but this is working towards the character development. There's quite a bit of imagination here.
The soundtrack is excellent and I never get tired of the opening and closing themes. The animation is very good with nice character designs and the CGI works out pretty well.
I've seen the entire series and I do believe this is a series worth getting. The only problem(which is small) that I really have is the use of comedy. Yes, it's one of FMA's strengths and it can be very funny at times. But I just feel it happens at the wrong times and this is often. You have to see it to get what I'm sayin'. Other than that, I find this series very entertaining and I do recommend picking this up. The first set is 4 DVD's containing the first 16 episodes.
Excellent series, nice production, but... June 30, 2008 Karin Welss (Dublin, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One of the best anime series to come along in recent years, Fullmetal Alchemist is an action-adventure series set in an alternate Earth, where alchemy rather than physics is the rule of the universe. Two young boys, both geniuses, try to bring their mother back from the dead, with horrific consequences that echo down the run of the series, and finally come full-circle in the final story arc. Engrossing, well-characterized storytelling.
Though I normally prefer the original Japanese voice actors to English dubs, the voice casting and directing on the English soundtrack is excellent.
Now for my nitpick, which has to do with how Funimation chose to package their DVDs. One of my pet peeves are previews/advertisements on DVDs that you cannot fast-forward through or skip. Funimation has put a long advertisement for Dragonball Z at the beginning of each and every disc in this boxed set, and you cannot fast-forward or skip it. Argh! It's extremely annoying.
