Product Description
Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret Dexter Morgan (Dexter Morgan (Emmy- and Golden Globe- nominated actor Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under") is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring socially responsible human being.System Requirements:Running Time: 655 MinsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 097368513648 Manufacturer No: 851364

An interesting and original idea that's very skillfully executed, Showtime's Dexter is never less than watchable, often quite compelling, and sometimes thoroughly riveting. As the 12 episodes from the show's first season (packaged here in a four disc set) reveal, it's also the epitome of "high concept," a kind of Silence of the Lambs for the C.S.I. generation. Creator-executive producer James Manos Jr.'s title character, one Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under renown), works for the Miami Police Department as an blood spatter analyst, visiting crime scenes and helping figure out what happened. He has an avocation, too: during his off hours, he tracks down some very, very bad people who for various reasons have eluded the proper authorities. Seems his adoptive father, a cop himself, taught the kid how to channel his dark side in a "positive" direction; and so, having captured these evildoers (including a child molester-murderer and a recidivist drunk driver with a trail of bodies in his wake), Dex dispatches them with clinical precision, thus making him a serial killer who snuffs serial killers. But there's more--much more, as it turns out. By his own description, Dexter is "a monster," an empty shell who fakes all human interactions and admits to no real feelings for anything or anyone, including his foster sister (Jennifer Carter) and his nominal girlfriend (Julie Benz), a former crack addict and battered spouse who's as uninterested in sex as he is. There's an explanation for Dexter's weirdness, of course, one so deep and traumatic that even he isn't aware of it. It's gradually revealed over the course of the season as he and the cops (who include Erik King, Lauren Velez, and David Zayas, all first-rate) track down the so-called "Ice Truck Killer," a fellow monster whose grisly m.o. both fascinates and taunts our hero, leading to a genuinely shocking and squirm-inducing finale. Dexter can be a bit arch, with an ironic, too-hip-for-the-room tone that get a little old. Still, it's a safe bet that anyone who views this first season will be salivating for the second. Extras include audio commentary on two episodes, a featurette about real-life blood spatter analysis, and a variety of DVD-ROM items. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars I'm Officially A Fan   August 27, 2008
Julian Tan (Singapore)
I have never watched a series this dark, complex and yet a little humorous at the same. It is brilliant to be able to dive into the inner psyche of a serial killer, to try and understand even if but a little, what goes through their cold and twisted minds. Michael C. Hall plays the character to perfection and it is mind boggling how the writers are able to deliver on each and every episode. I had to pace myself otherwise I would have watched the whole season in one day! I'm now waiting on the delivery of season2.

5 out of 5 stars You'll like it, but it may be too disturbing to watch   August 22, 2008
Dianne Taylor (Portland, OR USA)
I've showed the first episode of this series to a lot of people. Their opinions fall into two distinct categories.

Either they are fascinated and want to see more, or they are too disturbed to watch more. There are those who decline to watch further just on the principle that they object to the premise. Some say that they just can't find anything in Dexter to relate to. But nobody has ever suggested that the episodes aren't brilliant.

If someone had tried to explain the premise to me I wouldn't have been interested. Serial killers, bleh. But Dexter is different. It paints a picture of a man who was dealt a terrible hand early on in life, but who struggles to do the right thing, without the tools to determine what the "right thing" is other than what was imparted to him by his foster father (now deceased), who is a fascinating character in his own right.

Dexter has no social conscience and no emotional clues to guide him through the events of his existance, nothing but a firm faith in the principles of the man who raised him. When the very foundations of his faith in Harry are shaken, the choice that he is forced to make create one of the most hauntingly memorable scenes that I have ever seen in a TV series.

If you love Dexter...this is a must have! If you never saw Dexter before..now is your chance! If you like forensics, twist and turns in the plot lines that are fresh and new, the best humor and drama, great acting and characters you can sink your teeth into...Then buy this and see where it all began for Dexter. Then buy the Season Two and see where it is going to. A wonderfully written show, that is very well done all the way around. Michael C. Hall is outstanding and has been nominated for an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama! And he deserves this award! It's that good! . You will love to not hate Dexter and find out why as each episode, his reason for being who he has become unravels in the story of Dexter. I dare you not to love the show! I thought when this show came out I would not be interested in the story line as presented. Boy, was I wrong! I am so glad I watched one show and I was hooked! I missed the beginning and was so glad to put it all together when these DVD's came out! Buy it! You won't be sorry. Watch the new season and when you are hooked as I was, then buy Season One and Seaon Two find out how it all began. It is a winner! A real Fan of Dexter's!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing, unpredictable, question raising series!   August 11, 2008

What an amazing series. Unlike most crime/mystery series I've fell in love with, such as CSI, this series delivers...each episode leaving you starved for the next peice of the puzzel. For once, you, the viewer, are not treated like an idiot.... There was no holding back as far as plot goes, as you follow the stories of several well developed characters and their plights. Mystery after mystery evolve as we follow the Miami PD in the fight against crime, We follow Dexter and his own taboo battle against the evils of the world, and of himself, and we follow the relationships of several other characters...and how their relationships bring cause and effect into heartpounding action with each new episode. There is also an overlying story that leads to the season finale, where all hints and clues you've been left admist the smaller stories come to light. WOW!

The cast is amazing and refreshingly new. Michael C. Hall (Dexter) is an amazing actor who conveys much through expression and in some cases does not even need to speak to convey exactly what is going on. If you aren't ready to purchase the series, I highly suggest you rent it and give it a fair shot. As a fussy viewer, I like to feed the id but I don't like to cross the line into foul-mouthed pointless vulgarity. I swear to you, this is the perfect mix between what reality has become, and what happens to that moral light inside all of us struggling to find a place.

The first season pretty much follows the books of Jeff Lindsay (unlike the second series :( ), and adds a great twist to the season finale. OH, and lets not forget the ASTOUNDING Music by Mr.Licht, which sets the tone again and again as you watch. A treat for the eyes, the ears, and the mind, give this series a shot! Dare to let it raise the question within you about your own shadow self. Is it evil, or is it a natural response to a society gone defunct? A thin line we walk.
