"Box Set" i.e "A Bit of the Show in a Box" May 1, 2008 The Northern Light (Scandinavia, Close to Ultima Thule) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the only product or show I would ever buy from Murray Rothstein's (Sumner Redstone's real name) extremely subversive MTV. Even though a large part of the show is very vulgar and not suitable for anyone, really, parts of it are also highly original and amusing. The show is famous enough to leave out any long description of what it is. It is basically a bunch of Euro-Americans and various other peoples playing pranks on unsuspecting people throughout the world, dressing up as old people, doing extreme sports, messing around with each other and so on.
I was quite annoyed to learn that this is only about 50 % of the original show; the rest is missing for some reason. It might be censorship, copyrights, brand infringements or just lousy editing, I don't know, but the fact remains that this is FAR from comprehensive. That being said, I sometimes laugh myself silly, and my favourite scene that made me almost drop on the floor from laughter is where a slightly drunk Dave England dresses up like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, with a huge lump and a hideous face. He then goes around in the area around Notre Dame in his medieval outfit, asking various people to take his picture and whatnot. The poor Frenchmen are running away from him for their dear lives, and as he chases one of them, he calls out "Stay with me forever!" Now thats my type of humour!
So all in all, I'd buy this for that scene alone, but like most of the products from these guys, there's always large parts missing and it feels quite a lot like a moneymaking scam. I love the show, though, so I'm giving it 4 stars.
RIP OFF!! January 22, 2008 OogaOoga 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
At least 50 % of the original material is gone. On one of the audio commentaries they point out that you should be mad because material is missing I had no idea just how much material was missing until I went and watched my VHS tape of the original broadcasts. I should have never bought this DVD boxset my one VHS tape has way more material than on all 4 of these stupid DVDs. What rubbish.
I miss this show so much January 18, 2008 Judy Schinske (Everywhere) I am so sad that the show is not on anymore, it was one of the best and so darn funny. I really like this box set because there is a bonus disk that has a lot of good stuff on it. There is the gumball race with steve-o, Chris Pontius and Johnny Knoxville. There is also a cast interview which is really funny and then there is cribs with some of them, that is just insane. I would really recommend getting the complete box set rather then just the separated seasons because of the bonus disk and the little booklet.
... and that's why it's NOT called, "The Complete Box Set" May 26, 2007 Terrence Aybar (New York City) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was watching this in its entirety recently and I got pretty annoyed when I discovered that the milk drinking challenge was nowhere to be found on any of the discs. You get a flash of it in a montage at the start of one of the discs but that's it. In fact, as you pore through the set, you slowly start to realize that there are a couple of skits that are missing besides that one.
I have no idea why these skits are missing and in all honesty, it's a disappointment when you discover that what you're holding in your hands isn't the definitive Jackass collection that it should've been. Maybe it was legal issues? It'd have to be. I couldn't tell you exactly how many skits are missing but the information should be available somewhere. It's definitely more than a couple.
While there's a lot of crazy antics to sit through (and even with the missing skits, it's still a lot of stuff) including extra documentaries and stuff, I wouldn't really consider this set to be that well put together. I agree with someone else's opinion that instead of just lumping everything together, they should have kept the episodes intact. I don't mind that they still censor out the profanity but watching skit after skit after skit in no particular context gets boring. The set also comes with a decent little photo book with disc details plus behind the scenes info.
To make a long story short, had this have been a true completist's set, I'd have recommended it easily. The fact that it's not, coupled with the fact that it's missing my favorite skit from any of the episodes make this a box set that I can't recommend in good conscience. Especially to a die-hard Jackass fan.
