Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the 2008 CGI-animated theatrical film that serves as the kick-off to the weekly animated Clone Wars TV series. The concept came about way back in 1977's original Star Wars film, when Leia says in her message to Obi-Wan Kenobi "Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars." Initially a simple offhand reference that would reveal Luke's past, the phrase captured fans' attentions for years, until Episode II: Attack of the Clones revealed just how the Clone Wars figured into the battle between Republic and Empire. The 2008 movie is full of familiar characters--Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Count Dooku--and a new one: Ahsoka Tano, a young girl who has been made Anakin's Padawan. Together, the two headstrong youths embark on a mission to rescue Jabba the Hutt's kidnapped child, battling each other as much as they battle the Separatist forces. There are some kind-of-cool sequences, including duels with Dooku and his assassin, Asajj Ventress, and it's interesting to see some new corners of the Star Wars universe, such as the seamy underbelly of Coruscant. But Ahsoka and her penchant for nicknames that are too cute to stomach seem aimed only at tween-age audiences, and for all that goes on in the movie, nothing really happens in the end. The 2003 animated Clone Wars microseries, which had the advantage of being directly tied into the live-action film series, had much more emotional bite. At least some familiar voices return: Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO, and still the only actor in every movie), Christopher Lee (Dooku). Other voices include Matt Lanter (Anakin), Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka), and James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan). But even the traditional opening crawl has been replaced by a narration more suited for Starship Troopers. Veteran Star Wars fans will probably want to see The Clone Wars--once--but it won't take them long to discover that this Star Wars isn't their Star Wars any more. --David Horiuchi Stills from Star Wars: The Clone Wars (click for larger image)

MY NEPHEW JOE-JOE WAS JUST THRILLED TO GET THIS FOR CHRISTMAS. HIS LITTLE BROTHER WAS ALSO THRILLED...WHAT KID WOULDN'T BE. THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BIG INTO STAR WARS & THIS NEW ANIMATED SERIES IS RIGHT UP THEIR ALLEY.

if you ask me i enjoyed the film on the cinema , nice voices , soundtrack and a lot of action , well about the product , i was unable to watch the film from by DVD player or my xbox 360 because I'm from Greece and my dvd's are region 2 so i had to watch on my PC , now if you can purchase any sequel or prequel DVD's do it but i won't recommend you to prefer this DVD from the other Star Wars films , but if you are a true Star Wars fan you must add this DVD to your collection .

The Star Wars motion picture saga told the story of one Anakin Skywalker. The Clone Wars is here to tell the stories of other Jedi and of the clones. To a lesser extent, The Clone Wars fills in the gaps and answers some of the many questions the motion pictures failed to explain. As someone who has been a fan of the saga since day one in May 1977, I always wanted more than Lucas was ever able to provide on the big screen.
The focus of The Clone Wars is the clones. This movie, and the 30 minute episodes shown every week on The Cartoon Network, go to great pains to show us the clones are individuals with their own personalities and quirks. They realize they are just Bantha fodder in the great Republic war machine, yet they fight and die without question. If you're hurt, just a bit, every time a clone dies... that was point of this exercise.
Not only do we learn of the clones, but also of the other Master Jedi. The Sith and the Separatists are explored in great detail. The Separatist droids provide the comic relief. You'll recognize Lucas's dated corny-ness in every moronic thing the droids say.
If you don't like it, no big deal. Go watch the original triology on Laser Disc and enjoy. Star Wars is George's story done George's way... not yours, mine or ours to tell. The Clone Wars isn't perfect. Some parts are down right annoying. I've changed a lot since May 1977... and so has Star Wars.

I don't understand those who slam this movie (or the prequels!). I have watched it with my kids countless times now and it is very well done and a lot of fun (which is what Star Wars movies are meant to be, entertaining fun).
It's a great addition to the Star Wars universe along with the movies and several novels.
A must have for any Star Wars fan THAT GETS IT! (and isn't some nostalgic trip expecting to see a movies tailored just for them).

I'm a 40 year old professor and die-hard Star Wars fan. That said, I think mostly George Lucas shouldn't be allowed to touch his own material, 'cause he can't cast, can't direct, and is a poor writer. But man what a great conceptualist he is! Thankfully, on this project, he did just that and let the others do the casting, directing, and writing. It's great fun. The animation is beautiful (especially in Blu-Ray hi-def), the voice acting excellent, and the story is fun. I love this era, when Jedi were Jedi and the world wasn't quite so bad, and it's fun to see my favorite characters run around it. It's a great movie, a lot of fun, and the critical reviews were, for my money, really pretentious claptrap.
