Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Better than X2 and X3!   March 9, 2010
J. Lacayo
The best x-men film since x-men 1! I don't understand why people don't like this movie. It's a billion times better than that disgrace x3 and I even like it better than the over rated x2! I hear all these complaints about "how they made sabertooth wolverine's brother." Man when was the last time you read the comic, 1989?! In the book "origin" wolverine kills his own father just like in the beginning and while in the comic they don't say it out loud that he's his father, the guy he kills looks just like the classic wolverine, hinting that he is his father!! And even though no comes out and says Dog (the other son) is sabertooth, it is suggested, and not only that, wolverine and sabertooth are of a unique race of mutants (written by jeph loeb) and they are related! In the movie they just saved the confussion and made him his brother. I don't get what the big deal is. Another complaint I hear is the love story. Hey sorry man, but wolverine was in love with silver fox and was brainwashed into thinking sabertooth raped and killed her. They did a pretty good job tying that all in with x2 and all these people complaining that it's not like the book weapon x should blame brian singer because it was in his movie where they said wolverine "volunteered for the procedure" which is not true in the comic! He was taken against his own will but the film makers have to abide by x2, so don't go on saying this movies sucks because they changed the story. 75% of you idiots are the same ones praising x2 but complaining about this because of the story. I think this movie is better than x2 and hugh jackman does his best here and really delivers the rage. I'm reminded of the comics when he grabs stryker by the neck and screams "where is victor?!" another complaint I hear is how the weapon x procedure isn't exactly like the novel. C'mon, they had to change it because of x2!! People get mad because he ran away to an older aged heather and james, what did you expect, wolverine to join alpha flight?!! They had to change it and at least they kept heather and james appearance, all they did was make them old. I also keep hearing about dead pool and I can understand why people are upset that they sewed his mouth shut, that wasn't right and I hate it when they butcher characters (like they did to Rogue, Collossus, and Iceman). But I do like the adamantium bullet, it's so comic bookish and a good way to accommodate the mess they created with X2 (saying he volunteered). People complain to me how it makes no sense, having sabertooth still know wolverine at the end. BUT WAIT, in x1 sabertooth grabs wolverine's dog tag off magneto's desk like he knew him, like he recollected something in his mind and wanted his trophy! IT WAS IN X1 THAT THEY WENT NO WHERE WITH THIS!! The wolverine movie had to play off that little gesture because while wolverine doesn't remember sabertooth, sabertooth remembers wolverine! It was the lack of character development in x1 that made that part of the story difficult to conclude! Another complaint is why does sabertooth look so different in x1? THE VICTOR CREED AND SABERTOOTH PERSONAS ARE TWO DIFFERENT TIME ERAS!! Victor creed was less bulky and muscular if you look in the comics. I think this movie did a good job cramming in all the wolverine history and the x2 crap into a decent film. It's not easy to do, it's not even easy to talk about. I'm also very grateful for the Cyclops appearance. He really got disrespected in x3. I'm glad they gave him a moment to shine and to include gambit was cool too. I really liked the screen play as well, the constant show down between the jealous brother and the brother who has a conscious. The movie also has a lot of good action pieces. Thank you gavin hood and hugh jackman, this is way better than that x3 garbage and much truer to the comic than x2 was and anything that wasn't like the comic was because of what Brian Singer did in x2! This movie is just as good as X1 to me 4/5

1 out of 5 stars Wow. And I thought The Last Stand was bad.   March 9, 2010

I wish I could rate this a negative percent, but the 2009 summer movie season started out with such a magnificent hastily polished turd.

The story is completely inane and full of holes and gaps of logic, which would be okay if the characterization or action pieces were interesting or entertaining but those are extremely poor. The special effects look like cardboard cut outs flying around digital explosions. Most of the time CGI is used when a practical effect would have been wholly more effective, especially with Logan's claws.

As a comic book fan, they totally screw up that aspect too. Logan stands around disapprovingly when he is with his Weapons Plus team and does nothing. He has no character arc and they felt they had to give EVERYTHING he wore or did have an origin. We don't need Ma and Pa Kent to take him in and give him a leather jacket of their dead son; maybe he just likes leather jackets.
This is the kinda movie you get when a hack film maker that hates comic books as a medium and surely doesn't understand them or special effects.
Easily one of the worst movies ever.

1 out of 5 stars Blu-ray zones   February 26, 2010

I cannot watch the movies. I took for granted that being shipped to Europe, they would come prepared for the right zone. Tried to play it and then I realiced they came with zone A, for the States. Amazon will answer that I should have known, or checked, or it was my responsibility, or whatever, right? Next time I should go to a shop
